Through the four phases of life, a person’s sense of identity expands from their individual self, to their family, to their community, and eventually, to the Divine.
Ashramas are guiding principles for a full and satisfying human life. They are prescribed to be followed, However, exceptions aren’t considered a divergence from Hindu Dharma.
Based on one’s personality type, people may continue to stay in one specific ashrama for longer duration or through-out their life, ex: a person may dedicate his life for a cause (social cause, cancer research or mathematics) right from Brahmacharya stage and hence continues to be a Sanyasi, spending his life on the sanyasa ashrama stage.
